I dont care which teams would be better with Antonio in the slightest. I care who would be better for us than him. Aside from the obvious in the top 6 i'd consider the following as better options to lead the line

DCL
Broja
Toney
Vardy
Richarlison
Jiminez

The rest as you say are 50/50 or worse than Antonio. Maupay and Pukki for me are alot worse options than him.

We did better because Benni put it in the box and a player stuck it in the net.

anyway

West Ham have done the league double over Aston Villa in consecutive campaigns for the first time since the 1960s, when they beat them home and away in 1964-65, 1965-66 and 1966-67 under Ron Greenwood.

The Hammers are one of just two sides – along with Liverpool – to have scored in 100% of their Premier League home games this season.

Part of why we did better when he went off was because our shape was better. Yarma was staying central which gave us an outlet which is mad given Antonio has been playing that role for a while. He needs to stay in the box especially when there is no Bowen in the side

Huffers 2:11 Mon Mar 14
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread FT 2-1
Exactly, the biggest frustration is he doesn't stick to what he is good at.

Early doors in Spain he bullied the defender and got past him. Didn't even attempt a similar move after that.

Will Moyes be thinking the same though? I'm not convinced, mainly because if he thought that was a good option it would have gave him even more incentive to sign a forward, but he never.

Antonio would def be a quality option to have coming in from the wing with a proper world class forward leading the line. Would be a nightmare for any full back in world football.

Manuel, I agree with that and Antonio could also fill in up front to cover when needed.

I still think Antonio can be good for us out wide, if we ever sign a proper forward.

Probably been covered on here but.. Is Yarmo a better bet than Antonio in the 9 role for Sevilla?

What Yarmo seems to excel at is international / European competition when things actually matter. He is also strangely enough, the best out and out finisher at the club with a record to prove it. He lacks the energy to play for us on the wing as Bowen is much better. But in the box is there a player on the team you'd rather give that one chance to?

We are losing games because our finishing is basically crap nowadays.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread FT 2-1
The biggest issue is our misuse of Antonio. He is an on the shoulder, get behind player.

We are asking him to play back to goal and hold it. The issue is, Antonio backs in and try’s to use his body and physicality to protect the ball but by doing so he is so often off balance when he receives it. If he does hold it, his set is usually poor but most of the time the ball gets nicked because it bounces off him.

He’s been playing that role for 2 mins, CB’s been defending all their lives. A big physical CB will love that, ball in front of them, being lent on, it’s east to defend.

Antonio needs to lean in, push the defenders back and when he sees the ball, push off and move back towards the ball, that will give him the yard, he can then set, turn or spread play or win the free kick.

I look at our coaching staff and there isn’t an ex forward in there. I wonder who’s helping Antonio and picking up on little things.

It’s like Borja’s movement for the pen at Southampton, yes technically a foul but that little pull on the shoulder is clever, it’s great movement, that’s being coached into him.

A lone striker is one of the hardest positions to play, very few in the world play it well and they have done it most of their career. So it is tough for Antonio, he also is a bit isolated at times. He’s at his best when going forward, getting in behind - back to goal really isn’t his game.

Mex, I agree. But again you can’t just do it for 20/30 minutes. Fredericks has been poor in the main for us, a massive disappointment. That’s why we bought Coufal and why Johnson is trusted ahead of him too.

Everyone is too reactive these days. One half decent game doesn’t make up for a couple of poor seasons.

As for Antonio, he has always been Champions League or National League. There’s no real in between with him. As a player though, he’s contributed far more for us than the likes of Yarmolenko and Fredericks for instance. I personally think that commands a bit of respect and not going way over the top about his shortcomings, using stats to skew things (that’s what stats do a lot of the time).

So youd rather start Maupay or Pukki up front instead of Antonio this thursday night?

I haven't evaluated who I would have up front from the other 19 teams in front of Antonio for a good few months. I said a few months ago that there were only a couple who you definitely wouldn't pick in front of him. There was then a handful where it was 50/50 and the rest are absolutely no brainers.

List which team would be better off with Antonio rather than whoever their first choice striker is, forgetting about injuries and suspensions etc.

Re: Maupay & Pukki. I think both have kicked the ball in that chance in Seville the other night:

Pagey he's always been a very good technical player. Due to his injuries he lost his pace and became a liability, especially in defence but he will never lose his first touch, passing, shooting, etc.

Pagey, we also oddly played better when Cresswell went off and Johnson switched sides and Fredericks came on.
Johnson was better on the left than the right and Fredericks was better on the right than Johnson!!!

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread FT 2-1
I think you have missed why I mentioned Masuaku. Someone below said that we don't care how the goals go in. I agreed with that.

I then said that Antonio has only been scoring from set pieces, which isn't enough for the first choice striker, given that even from set pieces they are not anywhere near often enough.

Highlighting Masuaku's accidental goal from open play being the same as Antonio's in the last 29 games is demonstrating how he hasn't been effective up front in the last 6 months.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread FT 2-1
Yarmo’s goal was right in front of me but it all happened so quickly that I didn’t know what happened, just that he scored and we went mental. It was just the script we wanted when he came on.

Having now seen the goal on TV, I am in awe at that magic moment of class. It would have been an emotional strory even if he’d simply tapped into an open goal, but that was one of those special bits of skill like Lanzini at Palace. Epic.

Respect to the Villa fans for having the humility to applaud his goal, once the shock of conceding had passed. A classy act that will be remembered.

On to Thursday. A massive night for a massive side.

We did play better when Antonio went off yesterday, but that was one game. Yarmolenko looked really good when he came on but he hasn’t suddenly become different class. He’s been awful in the main, let’s not gloss over that.

Sajmo1 12:37 Mon Mar 14
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread FT 2-1
Thought we played better without Antonio. Yarmo has his faults but his linkup play, passing and decision making is on a different level. A top striker takes us to a whole another level

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Aston Villa- Official Match Thread
Huffers, why are you suddenly reeling off a load of pointless stats? What’s that got to do with me saying that you’re going way over the top with the slagging off of Antonio? Would you swap West Ham’s league position and place in Europe with a lot of the teams that those players play for?

This after you compared Antonio’s scoring record to that of Masuaku!

Nobody’s saying that Antonio is a world beater. I said you’re going way over the top with slagging off Antonio. Your last message proved that.

Really enjoyed the game again yesterday, I thought we played well, for most part we looked in control, thought we nullified Courthino pretty well and deserved the 3 points.

Wish we could stop having such nervy finishes though.

I’d never normally want Yarma on but felt that was written in the stars yesterday. Massive well done to him and very pleased he got the goal and support.

Thought Johnson looked like a completely different player at left back, felt he struggled at right back yesterday but excelled when he switched sides.

Benrahma was as frustrating as ever but pleased for him that he got 2 assists.

Been very critical of Soucek lately but felt he got a lot more involved yesterday and battled much better.

Pleased for Fornals to get a goal too, felt he needed that.

Diop aside the team that finished the game yesterday will probably be our line up for Thursday and Sunday. I can’t see Bowen, Antonio or Cresswell playing before the international break.

Hopefully a siege mentality can be adopted and we can really get the job done on Thursday and Sunday.
